Huge convergence of snow geese! 10k or more? Woke up to very noisy geese flying low in the dark and snow. Later in morning we started seeing them up high.

At very minimum 10,000. This was a mass migration coming from both the northeast and northwest. These are two different migration routes that seem to converge at the base of the sawtooths. I heard them all afternoon (I was not here in the morning). I could not count perfectly because of very low cloud cover that blocked my view of some of the flocks. I could still hear them flying over at 10 pm when it was fully dark. I counted 16 Ross's Geese in the mix. The vast majority of the birds were coming from the northwest, but some large flocks came from the Challis direction as well.

From approximately 6-7 pm until at least 5 am thousands of geese were seen, heard, photographed, and recorded migrating over the area. It is believed that they are snow geese, which seems to be out of the normal for their migration routes. Many people have said they don’t normally come through our region during their migrations, however this is unconfirmed information. Either way it was a beautiful sight and an amazing experience!

Thousands flying over. I personally heard them from 9pm to 10:30pm, flying high (not visible) and calling. Probably were going over for much longer than that.
